For any feminist who has lived through or was born after the second world war, the image of Rosie the Riveter has acted as an empowering symbol. When creating my feminist collection, Girl Gang, I knew I had to create my own little ode to this feminist icon, so I got sketching.
What I initially ended up with was an illustration of the Rosie arm, but I felt it looked a little bare, so I thought "why not add another, more contemporary feminist slogan as a tattoo?" So the Rosie the Riveter arm now has a nasty women heart tattoo.
I put the arm onto a red and white polka-dot background, inspired by Rosie the Riveter's bandana, and initially planned it as two art prints; one with dark skin, one with light (because if it isn't intersectional, it isn't feminism). But I saw the potential of the design and turned it into a number of different items; a second art print with the words "Feminist AF" in calligraphy, a nasty woman birthday card, a pocket mirror, and a rose-gold and wood pendant necklace and brooch. They worked wonderfully as a collection on their own, have been a big success in my stores and the necklace even ended up being featured on Buzzfeed!
